Founded in 1972 and open to union and non-union general contractors and construction managers, AGC, Akron Division, offers its members a wide variety of unique benefits and access to some of Northeast Ohio’s largest construction companies and organizations through strategic partnerships.
It’s important to note we’re a trade association and not a union. While we collaborate with local unions, we’re different in that we’re an organization founded and funded by contractor businesses. We participate in public relations, advertising, education, and other services that promote our industry.
Our Mission Statement
We strive to promote understanding, high standards, and good relations on behalf of our contractors with the construction industry and the community.
Our History
A Century of Leadership in Northeast Ohio Construction
The Associated General Contractors of Ohio, Akron Division has a long and influential history rooted in the early development of the American construction industry. While historical records date back to 1941—with some gaps—this overview highlights the organization’s evolution and its enduring impact on construction in Northeast Ohio.
AGC’s origins trace to 1918, when President Woodrow Wilson called for the creation of a national construction organization to support World War I efforts. From those beginnings, AGC of America grew into the nation’s leading construction trade association. In Akron, early industry leadership was shared between the General Contractors Association of Akron (GCAA) and the Akron Chapter of AGC America, with both groups playing vital roles through World War II, postwar rebuilding, labor negotiations, and workforce development.
During the 1960s, Ohio’s building chapters united to form a statewide structure, leading to the creation of the Associated Contractors of Ohio (ACO) in 1970. Akron transitioned from a standalone chapter to a division within the state organization, helping shape statewide advocacy, labor relations, and industry standards. In 1991, the organization became known as AGC of Ohio, Inc., a name it retains today.
Over the decades, the Akron Division has expanded its mission beyond labor relations to include safety programs, workforce development, scholarships, legislative advocacy, and community service. Notable initiatives include Operation Open Door for disabled veterans, partnerships with Kent State University and the University of Akron, youth outreach through iBuildNEO and Akron/Canton Builds, and sustained support for apprenticeship and mentoring programs.
Today, the AGC of Ohio, Akron Division continues its legacy as a trusted voice for contractors—promoting excellence, integrity, and opportunity while advancing the future of construction throughout Northeast Ohio.
